Andrew Luff MA FRCS FRCS(Ophth) FRCOphth

Andrew qualified from Oxford University and Guy’s Hospital Medical School training initially as a General Surgeon. He moved to Ophthalmology in 1988, gaining experience in Southampton before undertaking fellowship posts in both medical and surgical retina at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Andrew took up his post as Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Southampton Eye Unit in 1995, with a particular interest in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery. He now has a high volume vitreoretinal practice specialising in combined phacoemulsification and vitrectomy techniques. He is also innovative in medical and surgical treatments of macular disease, including the exciting new IOL VIP procedure for patients with otherwise untreatable macula diseases.

Andrew works closely with the academic department of ophthalmology in Southampton and was one of the pioneer users of intravitreal injection for the treatment of wet age-related macular degeneration in the United Kingdom.

In recent years he has promoted the technique of vitrectomy under local anaesthesia and has particular expertise in sutureless vitrectomy surgery combined with the insertion of multifocal implant lenses.

Andrew is a recognised surgical teacher and lectures regularly to ophthalmic trainees, general practitioners and optometrists.

 

Rory McClenaghan BSc (Hons) MCOPtom

Rory qualified as an Optometrist in October 1991 from the City University, London where he gained BSc (Hons) Optometry and Visual Science. After he qualified Rory worked mainly for independent optometric practices in the South of England as well as fitting contact lenses at Southampton Eye Unit.

In 2002 Rory was appointed to his present role as Principal Optometrist and Head of Optometry at Southampton Eye Unit. Rory undertakes private practice, fitting specialised contact lenses including scleral and paediatric contact lenses, as well as cosmetic and standard soft and gas permeable lenses. Rory provides Low Vision assessments and advice using some of the most up to date electronic equipment and Low Vision Aids available.

Rory organises lectures and regularly participates in meetings for ophthalmic trainees, general practitioners and optometrists.

 

The team

Andrew is supported by a dedicated team of people, including an ophthalmic nurse, a number of medical secretaries and a financial administrator.
