So on the day of surgery, we encourage you to have a normal breakfast and take all your normal medications, unless you’re having a general anesthetic.
You present for surgery, and you’re admitted by one of the nurses who makes sure that you’re fit for surgery. Then we put lots of drops in your eyes, and you meet the anesthetist, who puts a little injection around your eye to make it numb. And then you come through to the operating theater, and the surgery takes about 20 minutes. We put a little sheet over your eye while we’re doing it, and the old cataract, the old lens, comes out, and a new lens goes in.
We put a pad over your eye overnight, and then you come out for some light refreshments, and then make sure you’re fit to go home.
Cataract surgery is not as painful as people think it’s going to be. In fact, most people say it’s completely painless.
If you have an injection around the eye, that feels a little bit of pressure, but essentially, it’s not nearly as bad as you think it’s going to be.
