What is a Blepharoplasty? (Eyelid Surgery)

Blepharoplasty is a type of eyelid surgery that is designed to remove or reposition excess tissue, skin and fat around the eyes.

In the upper lids, the procedure is typically done for either cosmetic or more functional reasons, as it involves removing loose skin that may be obstructing your vision or causing a more hooded appearance. Usually done for cosmetic purposes, a blepharoplasty in the lower lids can smooth puffiness and remove under-eye bags, often caused by prolapsed fat or skin laxity.

The goal is to restore a more youthful, open look to the eyes while maintaining the natural function and symmetry of the eyelid.

Causes

Causes of Dermatochalasis

Dermatochalasis is the term used for excess skin in the upper eyelid. Over time, the skin around the eyes loses its elasticity. Additionally, fat that typically cushions the eye can bulge forward, creating ‘eye bags’ or a puffier appearance.

Other contributing factors can include sun exposure, genetics, and certain medical conditions. For some people, these changes begin earlier in life, causing more aesthetic concerns. An accurate diagnosis from an experienced oculoplastic surgeon is key to identifying whether blepharoplasty is the most suitable solution.

Treatment

Our surgeons perform Blepharoplasty using either local or general anaesthetic or under sedation. Our oculoplastic surgeons begin by making a careful assessment of your eyelids and the amount of excess skin.

  • For upper eyelid blepharoplasty, a small incision is made in the natural eyelid crease of the eyelid and another slightly above this. Excess skin and, where necessary, underlying fat are carefully removed at this stage. The incision is then closed with sutures to create a natural-looking result.
  • For lower eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision can be made just below the lash line or inside the eyelid, depending on what needs to be addressed. Prolapsed fat pads can be removed or repositioned, and loose skin is carefully removed.

The recovery process will likely involve mild swelling for a few weeks. After one to two weeks, your sutures will be removed, and your final results can be appreciated after a couple of months at the earliest. We advise taking one to two weeks off work to allow plenty of time for recovery, but we can advise you on what will be best prior to the surgery.
