Cataract is incredibly common. If you get old enough, you will have some degree of cataract. In fact, the opacity of the lens begins early in life. Even a 30-year-old can have a much more opaque lens than a 3-year-old. But we tend to reserve the term cataract for symptoms, typically dazzle, problems with the sun low in the sky. So ultimately, by the time you get to 80, it’s almost impossible not to have significant lens opacity. But the question always is, is it bothering you? Do you need surgery?
