  I’ve always had very poor eyesight. I started wearing glasses when I was seven. My optician said, you’ve got the start of cataracts. I went through a process via my opticians who referred me through the NHS, and I was seen and I was told, yes, you have got cataracts. Yes, they’re not good, but they don’t need doing yet. I went back to my optician and said, I can’t actually see properly. Driving at night actually got impossible. But I did a little bit of investigation myself and learned about these multifocal lenses, and I said to the optometrists, well, I’ll have those. Oh no, the NHS won’t do that. So I went down the other track and I saw Professor Luff, and he said, yes, they need doing, yes, you need multifocal lenses, and yes, I can do it. The whole thing was so straightforward, simple. All of his team are absolutely charming to deal with. Very caring. Did I feel him cut my eye? No. Was there any blood? No. It was extraordinary. The whole thing was totally painless and very, very quick. I thoroughly recommend it. The following day I got a call saying, how are you? How was it? After I had each procedure, I’m given a chart. These are the drops you’ve got to do. If you’ve got any problems, this is the number you call. You can call at any time. I could see literally straight away. A week after the second one, back to normal, swimming every day, which I do. Playing badminton. After three weeks, no problems at all. I said to Andrew Luff, you must get fed up with this. People saying, it’s miraculous, you are wonderful. But frankly, it was. Having not been able to see properly since I was a child, it is, it’s a miracle.
