Epiretinal Membrane Surgery
What is the best treatment for epiretinal membranes?
Duration 0:49
Transcript
The good news is that many epiretinal membranes remain very early and mild and barely affect vision. If you’re unfortunate and you have a more advanced epiretinal membrane, then vitrectomy surgery is very effective at removing the membrane itself. Unfortunately, if left until more advanced, many patients will not have good restoration of vision. So there is a balancing act between doing unnecessary operations too early on in the evolution of the membrane, where it may never affect vision, and leaving it too late, where even a successful operation can’t fully restore normal vision.
