When a cataract is removed, we replace it with a form of plastic lens. This is sometimes called an implant, or strictly speaking, an intraocular lens. So, any piece of plastic which is placed in the eye at the time of surgery to fulfil the role previously undertaken by your human lens, sometimes called the crystalline lens, is an intraocular lens or IOL.
