Modern vitrectomy surgery offers an excellent opportunity to repair macular holes. Hole closure rates are around 95% or higher in early onset smaller holes. The vision may never be entirely normal with some residual distortion and slight blur. But generally speaking the earlier the macular hole is operated on, the better the long-term visual outcome.
