A macular hole is a defect in the retina in the centre of the macular area usually affecting reading, ability to see faces, central vision. Sometimes people are aware of their macular hole almost immediately but other times particularly if it’s in the non-dominant eye then macular holes can be present for some time before they are noticed. Symptoms are central blur and sometimes distortion. Unfortunately left untreated vision continues to decline in most patients with loss of all reading function in more advanced macular holes.
