The majority of either lens replacement surgery or cataract surgery is carried out under a local anaesthetic. Certainly in my practice the vast majority of patients simply have anaesthetic drops and some local anaesthetic into the eye itself. This means really a painless procedure and post-operatively again the small incisions and the use of anaesthetic drops rather than injections, usually means a very rapid recovery with minimal discomfort, maybe an occasional paracetamol that evening at most.
