Refractive lens exchange is very similar to cataract surgery. The natural lens of the eye is removed and an artificial lens implanted. The key difference is that the reason to do the surgery in refractive lens exchange is primarily to decrease spectacles, glasses or contact lenses. Whereas in cataract surgery, the prime reason for the surgery is to remove the cataract.
